Sending API-Triggered Messages without Automated Message Rules

Since Automated Message Rules are only included with the Workflow Automation Module, we’ve received a few queries about what that means for those of you who have Automated Message Rules in place for the sole purpose of sending API-triggered messages.

Here’s a short FAQ on this topic.

Q: Can deliveries be scheduled through the API without Automated Message Rules?

A: Yes, marketing and transactional messages can be sent through the API without the use of Automated Message Rules. Details on the process for sending transactional messages through the API can be found here.

Q: What changes are needed if I want to continue sending API-triggered messages without the add-on Workflow Automation Module?

A: You must make the following changes to your existing API calls to migrate away from an API-triggered Automated Message Rule:

  1. Modify the existing addDeliveries API call by removing the messageRuleID
  2. Specify the “type” of message in the addDeliveries call (triggered, test, or transactional). If no value is specified, triggered will be used.

Q: Can I report on API-triggered messages without Automated Message Rules?

A: Yes, we recommend that you create a Delivery Group and associate the message to the Delivery Group so that you can easily report on API-triggered deliveries.

That's it for now!
